What Do Recruiters Look for in a Resume in 2026

Recruiters are busy. Most spend an average of 7 seconds scanning a resume before deciding whether to keep reading or move on.

Seven seconds.

That means your resume has less time to make an impression than it takes to tie your shoes. So what are they actually looking at in those 7 seconds – and how do you make sure they see the right things?

The 7-Second Scan: What Recruiters See First

Eye-tracking studies show that recruiters follow a predictable pattern when they first look at a resume. They scan:

• Your name and contact information
• Your current or most recent job title
• Your current or most recent employer
• The dates of your most recent position
• Your previous job title and employer
• Your education

That’s it. That’s the first pass. If anything in that initial scan raises a red flag or fails to grab their attention, your resume goes in the no pile.

What Recruiters Are Really Looking For

Relevance Above Everything

The number one thing a recruiter wants to know is: does this person have the experience we need? Your resume should make that answer obvious within the first few lines. Don’t bury your most relevant experience halfway down the page.

A Clear Career Story

Recruiters want to see logical progression. Each role should build on the last. Unexplained gaps, frequent short stints, or a scattered career path will raise questions. If you have gaps or a non-linear history, a functional or combination resume format can help frame your experience more strategically.

Accomplishments, Not Just Duties

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is listing what they were responsible for rather than what they actually achieved. Recruiters don’t just want to know your job description – they want to know what you did with it.

Compare these two:

• Weak: Responsible for managing social media accounts
• Strong: Grew company Instagram following from 2,400 to 18,000 in 14 months through targeted content strategy

The second version tells a story. It shows initiative, skill, and measurable results.

Clean, Readable Formatting

A cluttered, hard-to-read resume signals a lack of attention to detail – which is the last thing you want a recruiter thinking about you. Clean formatting, consistent fonts, proper spacing, and logical organization all communicate professionalism before they read a single word.

A Strong Summary Statement

The professional summary at the top of your resume is prime real estate. A strong summary tells the recruiter exactly who you are, what you bring to the table, and why you’re the right fit – in three to four sentences. Think of it as your elevator pitch in writing.

Keywords That Match the Job

Recruiters search their ATS database using keywords from the job description. If your resume doesn’t contain those words, it may never surface even if you’re perfectly qualified. Mirror the language of the job posting wherever it honestly applies to your experience.

Red Flags Recruiters Watch For

Just as important as what impresses recruiters is what sends them running. Watch out for these common red flags:

Typos and grammatical errors. A single typo can get your resume tossed. It signals carelessness and poor communication skills – two things no employer wants.

Generic objective statements. “Seeking a challenging position where I can utilize my skills” tells a recruiter nothing. Replace it with a specific, targeted summary.

Inconsistent dates. Overlapping dates, unexplained gaps, or vague timeframes like “2019 to present” when you clearly aren’t still there will raise immediate questions.

Too long or too short. For most professionals, one to two pages is ideal. An executive with 20 years of experience can go to three or four. A new graduate submitting four pages looks like they don’t know how to edit.

Outdated information. Listing your AOL email address, a fax number, or skills like “proficient in Windows XP” dates you immediately.

The Role of AI in Modern Recruiting

In 2026 recruiters aren’t just using ATS to filter resumes – many are now using AI-assisted tools that score candidates, flag potential fits, and even predict job performance based on resume content. This means the bar for a well-optimized resume has never been higher.

Your resume needs to impress software AND humans. That requires strategy, not just good writing.

You Only Get One First Impression

In a competitive job market you can’t afford a resume that’s just okay. Every detail matters – from the words you choose to the way the page looks to whether your file format survives the ATS filter.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone.
