5 Resume Mistakes That Keep You from Getting the Interview

When it comes to job hunting, your resume is your first impression — and often your only chance to make it past a recruiter’s quick scan. The average recruiter spends less than 10 seconds reviewing each resume. That means even a small mistake can land yours in the discard pile.

Here are five of the most common resume mistakes that can cost you interviews — and how to fix them.

1. Typos and Poor Formatting

It sounds obvious, but typos, grammar mistakes, and messy layouts are deal-breakers. A resume that looks rushed or unprofessional tells employers you lack attention to detail. Use a clean design, consistent fonts, and double-check spelling before you hit send.

2. Using a One-Size-Fits-All Resume

Sending the same generic resume to every employer is a fast track to rejection. Each job posting has its own keywords and requirements. Tailor your resume for the position by highlighting the skills and experience most relevant to that role.

3. Burying the Good Stuff

Recruiters shouldn’t have to dig to find your strengths. If your most impressive achievements are hidden on page two, you’ve lost their attention. Place key skills, results, and certifications near the top so they stand out immediately.

4. Listing Job Duties Instead of Achievements

Employers don’t just want to know what you were responsible for — they want to see what you accomplished. Instead of writing “Managed a team,” write “Led a 6-person team to increase sales by 30% in six months.” Results speak louder than duties.

5. Forgetting the Digital Gatekeeper

Today, most resumes go through applicant tracking systems (ATS) before a human ever sees them. If your resume doesn’t include the right keywords from the job posting, it may never make it past the filter. Optimize by aligning your wording with the posting — without stuffing.
